The Hollywood Walk of Fame is getting a more pedestrian-friendly makeover
Construction will begin in the summer of 2023 on so-called “quick-build” streetscape improvements along the most popular expanses of Hollywood Boulevard. In 2020, L.A. released its first concept images for plans to reduce lanes of car traffic and increase pedestrian space on that stretch of the Walk of Fame. Though that full master plan build-out is still a few years off, some of its meaningful alterations will arrive sooner.
The quick-build will convert most of the parking lanes on Hollywood Boulevard, into pedestrian zones with tables and chairs for dining, space for sidewalk vending and temporary art installations, and planters, landscaping and additional shade trees. The $7.2 million mini-makeover, funded by the Measure M-enabled Metro Active Transport program, will also provide bus shelters and boarding platforms, bike racks, transit kiosks, benches and waste receptacles.
A hidden tube station will open to the public for the first time in 100 years
For the first time in 100 years, some secret subways of London Underground will be open to the public. In a new tour, part of London Transport Museum’s ‘Hidden London’ series, visitors can explore the original Shepherd’s Bush Underground station, which opened in 1900. It’s been off-limits to the public since it closed in 1924 and its network of shut-off tunnels and platforms is preserved beneath the modern Shepherd’s Bush station, concealed behind locked doors and gates.
On the tour, you’ll learn about the gritty workings of tube travel, like how engineers cooled down passengers in the sweaty depths of the Central line, and how they introduced the first tickets that could be used on a variety of different transports – the precursor to the trusty Oyster card. ‘Shepherd’s Bush: Suburbs to the City’, selected dates, Oct 5-22. £44 per person.
A Frida Kahlo musical is headed to Broadway
It’s finally time for iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo to get the Broadway treatment: As first reported by Deadline, the late painter will be the subject of Frida, The Musical, a new production sanctioned by the Frida Kahlo estate and partially based on the book Intimate Frida by Kahlo’s niece Isolda P. Kahlo.
As of now, the musical is scheduled to hit Broadway in 2024, following workshops across regional theaters that will take place throughout 2023. Mexican composer Jaime Lozano will write the music for the show and playwright Neena Beber will work on the lyrics.
