China sets up world’s highest weather station on Mount Everest
China has successfully established the world’s highest weather station on Mount Everest after its scientific expedition scaled the summit. A team of Chinese scientists has set up the world’s highest weather station on Mount Everest, or Qomolangma, at an altitude of 8,830 metres above sea level. According to CGTN, China now has seven such stations, including three on the north side of the mountain, between 5,200 metres and 8,300 metres.
According to the South China Morning Post, the weather station will be the first to use high-precision radar to measure the thickness of snow and ice on the peak on the China-Nepal border. The report said that the new station replaces the Balcony Station, set up by American and British scientists in 2019. It was the highest weather station on Earth, sitting at about 8,430 metres above sea level, till now.

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be closed on May 10 for pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work. All operations will resume as usual post-1700 hrs on the same day. “For pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work, both #MumbaiAirport runways – RWY 14/32 & 09/27 will remain non-operational on May 10, 2022, from 1100hrs to 1700hrs. All operations will resume as usual post 1700 hrs on the same day.,” CSMIA tweeted.
Cyclone Asani: West Bengal Gears Up to Tackle Cyclonic Storm; Heavy Rains Predicted
Cyclone Asani is expected to gradually weaken into a cyclonic storm and recurve north-northeast wards and move towards the northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast, the weather department said. According to the forecast, all the coastal districts of West Bengal may be affected by the thunderstorm. Scattered rains have already started in various districts in the state, including Kolkata, since Monday morning. The weather office said that the level of rain in Kolkata will increase. Fishermen and coastal inhabitants were advised not to venture into the deep sea over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal on May 9 and 10 and over the northwest region adjoining northern Odisha and West Bengal from May 10 to 12.
The meteorological department has forecast light to moderate rain in North and South 24 Parganas. After that, there is a possibility of heavy rain with thunderstorms from Tuesday to Friday. The wind speed will be 30 to 40 kmph from Monday to Tuesday but the wind speed will be 40 to 50 kmph from Wednesday to Friday.
Yellow alert in Delhi from May 11 to 15, heatwave likely in national capital
The MeT issued a yellow alert from May 11 to 15. The maximum temperature will hover between 44 and 45 degrees Celsius, resulting in heatwave conditions at a few places in the city. For the plains, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature is over 40 degrees Celsius and at least 4.5 notches above normal.
