World’s first floating city to be based in Busan, wine to be served in eco-friendly paper bottles, replacing the traditional glass containers and more in top stories of the day.

World’s first floating city to be based in Busan

A prototype of the world’s first floating city, made to adapt to rising sea levels will be launched in South Korea – called OCEANIX Busan. The design has been approved at the UN headquarters in New York with accommodation for over 12,000 people. By 2050, over 570 cities worldwide would be at risk of rising sea levels, which will result in loss of life and property. This prototype will act as a base for similar floating cities in multiple other coastal cities of the world.

Wine to be served in eco-friendly paper bottles, replacing the traditional glass containers

With companies becoming increasingly carbon-neutral, the popular Italian wine brand ‘When in Rome’ becomes the first to sell wine in paper bottles. The Guardian reported a statement by When in Rome CEO Rob Malin, who said “Great wine doesn’t have to come in glass bottles,” “Whether you’re drinking from a glass bottle or a paper bottle, the quality of the wine is not impacted.” Warning against putting the paper bottle in an ice bucket, Malin further added “It will go soggy. You need to use a dry chiller.” This move will help reduce the carbon footprint, as well as, the hefty glass sculpting charges.

Sun, sea and now smoke free: Barcelona bans cigarettes on the beach

Barcelona beachgoers will no longer have to contend with cigarette butts or passive smoke starting in July when Spain’s second largest city will ban smoking on all its beaches, the city hall said on Friday. The decision comes after a pilot project las year saw smoking banned on four of the city’s 10 local beaches. “Beaches with no smoking allowed will offer healthier communal living areas, with less waste and will respect the defence of environment,” the statement said.

IMD warns of fresh heatwave in northwest, central India from May 7

The Met department in its latest bulletin said that Uttar Pradesh, west Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab will get isolated rainfall on Thursday before a fresh spell of heatwave conditions starts on May 7. The heatwave conditions are expected over central Maharashtra on Thursday (May 5), and remain over Rajasthan between May 7 and 9. In south Haryana, southwest Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha (in Maharashtra), and Delhi, the heatwave will persist on May 8 and 9. The IMD bulletin said Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and west Rajasthan are likely to get isolated rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning later on Thursday.
