Cocktails With A Twist | 3 Creative Gin & Tonic Ideas

Did you know that gin and tonic, one of the most popular cocktails in Great Britain was founded in India when the British East India Company reigned the country? The Scottish doctor, George Cleghorn, used quinine to treat malaria in India. Quinine is a flavor component of tonic water. The quinine had a bitter taste. Eventually, sugar, lime, and gin were added to the quinine to make it taste better. Tonic water today is made with much less quinine and is obviously no longer used to treat malaria.

For well over a century, the gin & tonic has reigned as one of the most popular cocktails in the world. A 2016 study by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association found that in Britain alone, gin sales comprised 40 million bottles a year, or enough to create 1.12 billion G&Ts annually.

1. Cherry Berry Gin and Tonic

Ingredients:

Handful of ripe sweet cherries or canned cherries
60ml gin (we have used Tanqueray London Dry Gin)
130ml tonic water
Fresh lime
Fresh blackberries or raspberries for garnish

Remove the seeds from the cherries then put them in a mixing glass and muddle them lightly. Add lots of ice to to your glass along with the muddled cherries, blackberries or raspberries, gin, tonic and a few good squeezes of juice from the lime (adjust according to how tart you like your G&T).

Stir gently for a minute or two, until the juice from the cherries has mingled well with the G&T

2. Fall Gin and Tonic with Spiced Orange and Cinnamon

Ingredients

60ml gin
130ml tonic
Fresh orange slices (plus peel, to garnish)
10ml apple juice
Fresh ground nutmeg
Cinnamon stick

Pour gin and tonic into a glass over plenty of ice, add in a few orange slices, a little sprinkle of ground nutmeg and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

3. Red Pepper and Coriander Gin and Tonic

Ingredients

1 red pepper (chili)
Juice of half a lime
60ml gin
130ml tonic water
Coriander leaves to garnish

Slit the chili lengthwise and scrape out and remove the seeds and pith. Slice and muddle gently in a glass. Add ice, lime juice, and gin. Top with tonic and stir gently until chilled. Garnish with coriander leaves.
