When Harry Met Sally may take all the credit for popularizing this classic New York City diner, but Katz’s Delicatessen has been a New York institution for more than a century. This kosher-style restaurant opened in 1888 as a small deli called “Iceland Brothers” at a time when Jewish establishments dotted the neighborhood. Its name changed to “Iceland & Katz’s Delicatessen ” and then to “Katz’s Delicatessen”. Four thousand visitors from around the world flock to Katz’s daily to feast on the most delectable sandwiches, platters, and meats. But one must give credit to the New Yorkers making Katz’s an inherent part of the city’s culture and history by enthusiastically spreading the word, bringing their friends in, writing books, shooting films, and coming back every time for the best melt in the mouth Pastrami. Katz’s has also built its reputation over the quality of meat served. Their meat and pastrami are cured using a slower method, which best flavors the meat, without injecting chemicals, water, or other additives to speed the process. So their finished product can take up to a full 30 days to cure, while commercially prepared corned meat is often pressure-injected (or “pumped”) to cure in 36 hours. Yep, you read that right. 30 days vs. 36 hours.

Now, if that’s not enough then if you are a fan of the movie ‘When Harry Met Sally’ you can have what Sally’s having at the deli from that famous scene anytime you’re in NYC! You can even sit at the exact table Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan sat at. It’s marked by a sign that reads “Where Harry met Sally… Hope you have what she had!”
