Siyam Iru Fushi recently hosted its annual Eco Week – Celebrating Our Planet, a vibrant celebration aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainability. This meaningful initiative brought together guests and team members in honor of World Reef Awareness Day, World Environment Day, and World Ocean Day through a variety of engaging and purpose-driven experiences.
The week commenced with a conservation-focused snorkelling tour and reef clean-up, guided by the resort’s resident Marine Biologist. This immersive experience allowed guests to discover the beauty of the island’s house reef while actively participating in its protection. World Environment Day was marked with a symbolic tree-planting activity and a serene nature walk through the island’s verdant tropical trails.

World Ocean Day featured a coral planting session at Waters Edge Beach, where guests contributed directly to the resort’s reef restoration efforts. As night fell, an open-air screening of a thought-provoking documentary on coral ecosystems brought deeper insight into marine conservation. The day ended with an enchanting night snorkel, offering a rare glimpse into the reef’s nocturnal wonders.
Eco Week is a reflection of Iru Fushi’s long-standing dedication to sustainability under its Sun Siyam Cares programme, which curates experiences that foster a deeper connection with the natural world while encouraging environmental stewardship.

Continuing its commitment to eco-conscious practices, the resort has launched multiple sustainability initiatives, including coral rehabilitation, frequent reef clean-ups, and tree-planting efforts across the island. So far this year, 126 trees have been planted and 18 coral frames installed in the lagoon. The transition to glass water bottles and the implementation of an on-site bottling plant have significantly cut down on single-use plastic consumption. Additionally, community engagement remains a priority, with the resort supporting local schools and conducting educational sessions on environmental awareness.
Sun Siyam Resorts remains firmly dedicated to operating responsibly in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Through the Sun Siyam Cares initiative, the group strives to lower energy and water consumption, reduce plastic dependency, uplift local communities, and invest in green energy. The programme also emphasizes conservation efforts and the safeguarding of local heritage to reduce environmental impact and contribute positively to regional socio-economic development.
