E-passes mandatory to visit Ooty, Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu from May 7 to June 30, 2024

Are you thinking about visiting Ooty and Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu? To manage the influx of tourists and safeguard the Nilgiris’ ecosystem, the Madras High Court has made it mandatory for visitors to Ooty and Kodaikanal to obtain an e-pass before their trip. Effective from May 7, 2024, to June 30, 2024, this new requirement aims to regulate tourism flow during the peak season.

The e-pass was introduced by a special division bench comprising Justices D Bharatha Chakravarthy and N Sathish Kumar. It was to address the challenges posed by the influx of tourists in the hill stations. However, there is no cap on the issuance of e-passes, and local residents are exempt from this regulation.

The Madras High Court’s decision also comes in response to traffic congestion. By implementing e-passes, the court aims to collect data on vehicular movement along the challenging ghat roads leading to these destinations.

Following a report highlighting the overwhelming influx of over 20,000 vehicles daily, including 11,500 cars and 6,500 two-wheelers, during peak season, the court instructed District Collectors to establish an online platform for e-pass issuance. These passes will be mandatory for entry, facilitating regulated access and alleviating traffic congestion on strained roadways.
