Flan is essentially a dessert of sweetened egg custard inside an open sponge cake with a caramel topping. It was first brought to Mexico by the Spaniards during the conquest and occupation and has since become a popular dessert, not only in Mexico but most of Latin America. Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, all have their own versions of crème caramel as it is known is some of them.
The classic Spanish flan has been through an exciting journey of experimentation, and now you have variations that are too many to count. But we will name a few – which we like. Chocolate, coffee flan, strawberry flan, and mango flan. So, when you are next in Mexico (or any other lovely Latin American country) and feel like a bit of something sweet to go after the hot spicy food, try any one of the above listed. You will realize what a perfect ending means.
