Burmese Cuisine

While Burmese cuisine might not enjoy the same level of global recognition as Thai cuisine, it certainly deserves attention. Emphasizing freshness and healthiness, Burmese food exemplifies the farm-to-table ethos. Locals deeply value their connection to the land, evident in their culinary practices aimed at minimizing waste. This is apparent in dishes like laphet thoke, a vibrant fermented tea leaf salad where pickled leaves are combined with fresh vegetables, peanuts, and other flavorful ingredients. Burmese cuisine boasts a rich array of curries, blending Indian spices with Thai influences to create a unique and flavorful culinary experience.

Must-Eats

We began our tasting adventure with Samuza Hincho (a zesty broth adorned with two petite samosas floating within). Next up was the Mandalay Laphe Thoke. “Laphe” signifies tealeaf in Burmese, while “thoke” translates to salad. This tealeaf salad boasts a vibrant palette, bursting with the crunch of finely sliced vegetables and nuts, accompanied by an intense tealeaf paste flavor, making it a crowd favorite. Next, we indulged in some crispy Spring Roll Salad. Yes, you heard it right. The Burmese ingeniously reimagine spring rolls as salad, incorporating tomatoes, fresh bean sprouts, and a zesty tamarind-chili oil dressing for an extra kick. We also savored “Wa” Potatoes, Edamame & Broad Bean Hummus, and Pan-Fried Rice Dumplings, each crafted to perfection, radiating the warmth and hospitality of Burma.

Moving on, we relished the Triple Mushroom Palata, a flaky bread filled with a delightful mixture of black fungus mushroom, oyster, and shiitake, followed by a generous portion of Tohu Mash with Paratha. The Tohu, crafted from chickpea flour and adorned with a vibrant, spicy sauce, offered a succulent beginning to our meal.

The highlight of our meal was unquestionably their signature Oh No Khowsuey, a crowd favorite featuring the expected creamy indulgence of coconut milk broth complemented by the comforting crunch of crispy shallots and toasted garlic. It’s simultaneously comforting and boldly flavorful.

To wrap up our culinary journey, we indulged in decadent desserts such as Street-Style Burmese Falooda and Tagu Piyan coconut panna cotta. Burma Burma promises an unforgettable dining experience.
