27 Airports In India Closed Till May 10; 400+ Flights Cancelled; Pre-Boarding; Check All You Need To Know

Amid rising border tensions, the India has temporarily shut down over 25 airports spanning northern, western, and central India. This directive is in force until May 10, 2025, according to multiple sources.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) released a series of Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), which led to the suspension of services at 27 airports, including key locations such as Leh, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Jodhpur. The measure resulted in the cancellation of roughly 430 flights, impacting nearly 3% of India’s scheduled air traffic.

As outlined in the NOTAMs, airports affected include Leh, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Patiala, and Halwara in Punjab; Shimla and Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh; Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Kishangarh in Rajasthan; as well as Bhuj, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Mundra, Porbandar, Kandla, and Keshod in Gujarat. Airlines also confirmed disruptions at Gwalior and Hindon airports, as reported via X. Civilian air traffic in certain parts of western India saw a marked decline. In response to the situation, several international carriers—including United Airlines, Korean Air, and Lufthansa—opted to divert flights to avoid the affected region. These route changes led to extended travel durations and increased operational costs.

India has also raised security at Indian airports and flights to the highest level with immediate effect. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) Thursday ordered all passengers at all airports across the country will need to undergo secondary ladder point security check (LPSC) or pre-boarding check. Also, visitor entry to terminal buildings has been banned.

Airlines have expressed safety concerns, highlighting risks like GPS spoofing that could potentially misguide aircraft into conflict zones. This issue has added to the operational challenges in the already volatile regions of the Middle East and South Asia. The temporary closure of 27 airports in India indicates the severity of the current border situation.
