Back in the summer of 2015, on our first trip to the Big Apple, we had reserved an entire day to visit hotspots in and around 5th Avenue. I distinctly remember starting the day by visiting the Time Warner Centre, walking past Central park, stopping by at The Plaza Hotel for their Mel in the mouth tuna sandwich, crossing over to the other side of the road to have our own Breakfast at Tiffany’s moment. Overwhelmed by the upscale boutiques, fancy flagships, and iconic landmarks, as we headed to our last (planned) stop Bloomingdales, distracted by a phone call we missed the building to land up serendipitously in front of the 1954 institution, easily recognizable from the John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale starrer Serendipity. Named ‘Serendipity 3’ this Upper East Side dessert destination has been popular since its opening and Hollywood stars including Marylin Monroe frequently patronized the restaurant. The Frrrozen Hot Chocolate at this NYC remains one of the most popular items on its menu of over-the-top desserts. In 2018, Serendipity served its 25 millionth Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. In 2004,

Serendipity celebrated its fiftieth anniversary by introducing the record-breaking Golden Opulence Sundae, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most expensive dessert, at $1000. We thought of sharing the little-known facts about the 64-year institution so that you can indulge in a little Serendipity trivia next time you wait outside for your own taste of the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate.
