Kolkata's Peter Cat Ranked As The 17th Most Legendary Restaurant In The World

To say that Kolkata has a strong restaurant history is underselling it a little. A city filled with history and heritage, art and culture, glitz and glamour, has gone on to become the most iconic food capital of India. But it didn’t happen overnight. Calcutta was the seat of British colonial power in India for almost 200 years. Over time, Calcutta became Kolkata with inhabitants from China, Portugal, and Armenia among others settling here and ensuring that local ingredients are mixed with techniques and flavors brought in by the immigrants, lending the food the unique and multicultural character it enjoys today, and building a food scene with a library of dishes, across street foods, family diners, bakeries, and landmark institutions like Peter Cat, our special feature today.

One of the most beloved restaurants in India, Peter Cat stands proudly as one of the oldest establishments in the heart of Kolkata with people from around the world queuing up for hours to taste their signature dish – The Chelo Kebab. (The melt in your mouth kebabs are prepared with Bengal spices and blended with Persian herbs and served on a bed of rice with butter and a poached egg. Oh, there’s a vegetarian option as well, but that’s not our first choice.

As the country begins to unlock and reopen restaurants and malls, Peter Cat has also opened its dine-in restaurant in Park Street (as per government guidelines).

Following are some of the initiatives undertaken by the restaurant to ensure safe and hygienic food along with a unique dine-in experience, as narrated by Sid Kothari – the owner of Peter Cat, Kolkata

Food safety  – Its single biggest priority right now is to provide safe and hygienic food to guests

Menu – Table Mats have been specially created to display the menu, as these can be easily cleaned or replaced after every use.

Crew safety – Crew across the restaurant operate with gloves, face masks and adhere to prescribed social distancing guidelines. Every crew member undergoes a mandatory temperature check.

Sanitisation – Sanitisation protocols are stringent and they include not just the crew hand washing but also sanitization of guest areas like the billing counter and lobby. Guests are also provided with sanitizers for their hands and shoes.

Social distancing and hygiene for dine-in guests – Social distancing is being practiced by ensuring 50% capacity, converting four-seater tables into 8 seaters to give space between tables and seats, using 6 feet high glass shields as table separators to help them maintain safe distance as guests dine-in.

Safe delivery – While online orders can be placed on Swiggy and Zomato, every delivery bag is signed off by a crew member with his/her personal assurance on the safety protocols with which the food has been made.

Additionally, one can also order takeaways whilst at the restaurant.
